What is Indaba?
Indaba was born out of a desire to provide an opportunity for the shoreline community to explore topics related to race and racism. As a result, a series of 8 sessions were designed to help participants answer the question, “But, what can I do about racism?” This workshop series was named Indaba.
The word Indaba is from the Zulu and Xhosa languages. It means, “a council to discuss a very important topic.” An apt name for our vision.
At this time there have been two cohorts of Connecticut shoreline community members who have participated in the Indaba Workshop Series. When the series ended, participants wanted to continue their learning and get involved in anti-racist activities. They subsequently formed the Indaba Action Team to provide activities for the shoreline community to share information about issues related to racism by creating opportunities for discussion in order to grow knowledge and deepen understanding of this important topic. To date, the Indaba Action Team has hosted a number of events such as author talks, plays about the BIPOC– Black, Indigenous, and people of color– experience and several community conversations.
